Olivia Rodrigo has mastered the art of re-creating the grunge glamour of the mid-’90s – that ingénue aura marked by bohemian hair, minimal make-up, and a slightly affected air. But to play into the Met Gala 2023’s theme, Rodrigo and her glam team looked to another bygone era: Old Hollywood.

Gone were allusions to Alanis Morissette, replaced by an ode to Audrey Hepburn – one furthered by a black and white gown that called to mind the Ascot races of My Fair Lady. Hairstylist Clayton Hawkins swept Rodrigo’s signature lengths into a taut midi knit, a hint of volume at the crown leading to quietly curled baby bangs. “I’ve always wanted to do a baby bang on Olivia, and I’m so glad we got to do it!” says Hawkins, who perfected her look with the help of Tangle Teezer’s The Ultimate Styler. Though the look was new territory for the pop star, certain touches (like a black manicure) ensured the moment was in keeping with her own tastes.

“The overall aesthetic was quiet but powerful, sculpted glam,” says make-up artist Nina Park, who was inspired by the graphic lines of Rodrigo’s gown to create a bold brown eye, softened by a nude lip. And the finishing touch? Winged liner using Crushliner Stylo Waterproof Eyeliner in Noir Intense, of course – in Park’s words, “Olivia’s favourite.”

Doja Cat showed up to the 2023 Met Gala in New York City Monday dressed as Choupette, the cat of the late designer Karl Lagerfeld.

The theme of this year’s Met Gala is “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” the same name as the exhibition which opens at the Met on May 5.

“The show spotlights Lagerfeld’s unique working methodology, focusing on the late designer’s stylistic vocabulary as it was expressed in ‘through lines’—aesthetic and conceptual themes that appear time and again—in his fashions from the 1950s to his final collection in 2019,” the museum’s description reads.

Doja and her team did their best to ensure that her outfit was unveiled at the right time, using umbrellas to hide her as she exited her hotel.

Doja took the role so seriously that she conducted a whole interview where she meowed with Emma Chamberlain for Vogue.

The musician also spoke with La La for Vogue about attending her first Met Gala.

Jared Leto also paid tribute to Choupette with a full body costume, which kept his identity shrouded in mystery until he removed the head. The actor/musician had a full outfit change on the carpet, switching into a black ensemble.

the 2023 met gala celebrating

The Best- and Worst-Dressed Celebs of the Met GalaTaylor Hill – Getty Images

The Met Gala is the biggest night of the year in American fashion and also the most eagerly awaited red carpet among the celebrity-watching set. In recent years, we think the interest in the Costume Institute’s annual fundraising gala has far outstripped the Oscars, the Grammys or any of the other star-filled prom nights. This year’s gala paid tribute to the legendary Karl Lagerfeld, which gave the attendees a wide range in their choices, because the late designer cast such a long shadow over the last half century of fashion. The efforts this year ranged from classic looks to outrageous costumes. Here are the 25 looks that thrilled or disappointed us the most.

Dua Lipa in Chanel

The “Sweetest Pie” singer and co-star of the upcoming Barbie movie served as one of the hosts of the night, and we confess that we found her look for the evening to be pretty but severely underwhelming. It’s a perfectly fine Lagerfeld design, but the obvious centerpiece of the look is that insane Tiffany pendant. We’re not opposed to some obnoxiously large jewels at the Met Gala, but we tend to think the fashion should be the real star of the night.

This dramatic gown, which she wore in a 2004 Chanel No. 5 film, is gorgeous of course, but we didn’t agree with the styling choices here. This is the kind of dress that calls for an up-do (which she happens to look great in) and those black sandals are too focus-pulling and heavy for such a floaty, dreamy gown.

Cockroach

A cockroach. Not the one seen at the Met Gala.Barnaby Chambers/Shutterstock

  • One cockroach had a Met Gala moment that most celebrities only dream of.

  • The lone roach was filmed scurrying up the Metropolitan Museum of Art stairs.

  • It is unclear what became of the couture roach after it disappeared into a throng of onlookers.

Certain celebrities might find it impossible to secure invitations to the Met Gala, but one cockroach got in with ease.

A lone New York City cockroach scurried up the steps of the Met while being filmed and photographed by curious onlookers.

The insect darted from side to side across the carpet, expertly navigating its way up the steps.

At one point, the couture roach paused at the top of a step as if working its angles for the paparazzi.

To some pundits, the roach’s all-black look might’ve been a safe take on the Met Gala’s Karl Lagerfeld-inspired theme, but sporting six rather than two legs on the red carpet is a bold, Kafkaesque choice.

Variety reported on Monday night that the “Met Gala Cockroach” met an untimely end shortly after its moment of glory.

“It is with deep sadness that we must report the #MetGala cockroach was stepped on. #RIP,” the media outlet tweeted.

Jared Leto cosplayed Karl Lagerfeld’s cat, Choupette, at the 2023 Met Gala.

The “House of Gucci” star made his fifth appearance in a full fur suit, dressing as the late designer’s beloved cat Monday evening, themed to honor the legacy of Lagerfeld.

The 30 Seconds to Mars frontman — who is set to star in and produce a biopic of the late Chanel fashion designer — eventually removed the detachable head and was all smiles as he displayed the eerily-realistic costume of Lagerfeld’s famous Birman cat.

Chouppette was originally rumored to be making her own Met Gala debut but ultimately stayed home.

Leto, 51, later changed into a black ensemble, featuring a silver neckline. He paired the look with a black cape that showcased white shoulder pads.

The “Suicide Squad” star finished his second look off with black gloves and a smoky eye.

The multi-hyphenate wasn’t the only star to hit the carpet as the beloved feline.

Doja Cat also made her debut wearing synthetics on her face to appear as feline-esk as possible.

At the 2022s Met Gala, Leto was mistaken for a “mystery man” on the carpet who was later revealed to be Fredrik Robertsson.

Honoring Karl

On the first Monday in May and for more than 70 years, the prestigious Costume Institute at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art has held the same ritualistic – some might call it a circus – fund-raising gala to which the fashion and entertainment world flock. The stars, flamboyantly and extravagantly dressed, strut their stuff in the framework of an assigned theme: This year, it was to pay tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld – for which Rihanna and A$AP Rocky went the extra mile.

Lady of the Camellias

The singer Rihanna, who is pregnant with her second child, made her appearance covered in camellias, in homage to the fashion house for which Karl Lagerfeld worked for 36 years. The camellia became one of Chanel’s symbols in 1913, three years after the fashion brand was founded, when Coco Chanel was photographed on a beach in Etretat, on France’s north coast, with a flower attached to her belt. The designer loved it for its aesthetic purity but also for its olfactory neutrality: Like the dahlia, the camellia is one of the rare flowers without any smell.

Black cat

In a nod to Lagerfeld, Rihanna also made sure to hide behind a pair of shades. The designer never showed his eyes and liked to say: “Dark glasses are like eyeshadow. They make everything look younger and pretty.” However, as far as we know, he never chose to wear cat-eyes sunglasses with false lashes.

2023 Net worth of Anna Wintour

According to annawintour-net-worth/”Celebrity Net Worth, Anna Wintour’s net worth is estimated to be $50 million. All thanks to decades of helming Vogue and gatekeeping the fashion and publishing worlds, as well as their intersections. However, Wintour is a publishing nepo kid since she’s the daughter of The Evening Standard editor Charles Wintour and stepdaughter of Audrey Slaughter, a magazine editor who founded publications Petticoat, Honey and Over 21. So fortunately stepping to writing was not difficult for her.

Her First job

When Wintour was 21 years old, Harper’s & Queen hired her as an editorial assistant for her first publishing position. Later, she moved to New York City with her then-boyfriend, journalist Jon Bradshaw, and was employed by Harper’s Bazaar as a junior fashion editor. She recalled that the reason she was fired nine months later was that she at the time lacked sufficient knowledge of American fashion.

Anna Wintour, the editor of Vogue and global editorial director of Condé Nast, has been the maestro of every Met Gala since 1999. But this time, it’s personal.

Not just because the exhibition the party honors is devoted to the work of the much celebrated designer Karl Lagerfeld, who died in 2019, but because Mr. Lagerfeld was one of Ms. Wintour’s closest friends for decades. He created the clothes that, she said, “I’ve worn to the most important events in my life — to my wedding, to my children’s weddings, to Met Galas and state dinners and tennis championships at which I watched my heroes compete for their dreams.”

For her, she said, Mr. Lagerfeld’s designs were “a uniform, a kind of armor and a way of holding certain moods and memories close. His fashion does for me what fashion should. It makes me feel more confident in being myself.”

Now, when she wears his work, she said, “I still feel that I have him near.” The Times asked Ms. Wintour to pick some of the favorite Lagerfeld designs that still hang in her closet and describe the memories they evoke.

I wore this collaged Chanel dress to the amfAR gala in New York alongside Hillary Clinton when she was in the middle of her first term as senator in 2003. I wanted to feel both chic and confident. I was delighted when, some years later, my daughter-in-law, Elizabeth, wore the same dress to her first Met Gala. Karl, who liked to strike a pose against nostalgia, took one look at her and said, “Recycled!” In fact, Karl’s dresses are enthusiastically recycled in my family, treated with reverence — but not
