Helmut Lang and Ralph Lauren kick off New York Fashion Week

Amid sweltering heat and jitters over the Hollywood strike, New York kicked off its Spring-Summer 2024 Fashion Week on Friday, with heavyweights Ralph Lauren and Helmut Lang returning to the industry’s flagship event with fresh ideas.

American luxury brand Coach unveiled its collection of sensual translucent dresses at the New York Public Library in Manhattan on Thursday, but the event was briefly disrupted by animal rights activists.

As Vogue editor Anna Wintour and Jennifer Lopez watched the show, two female protesters from the animal rights group PETA — one covered in body paint that mimicked animal flaying and another holding a poster that read “Coach: Leather Kills” — joined the models on the runway before security led them away.

At another unofficial kick-off event on Wednesday, featuring Naomi Campbell, Doja Cat, Naomi Osaka and Gigi Hadid, the iconic lingerie label Victoria’s Secret teased a film meant to showcase the brand’s new and more inclusive identity after it was criticized for designing garments that objectify women.

The film, entitled “The Victoria’s Secret World Tour,” to be released on Amazon Prime at the end of September, highlights the work of creators and artists from Lagos, London, Bogota and Tokyo.

This year, New York Fashion Week will feature young talents and emerging brands, along with heavyweights such as Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Altuzarra, Gabriela Hearst, Carolina Herrera, Tory Burch and Luar.

The city will then pass the baton to London, Milan and Paris.

As soon as the first photos from “The Real Housewives of New York”‘s reunion hit the internet, people were up in arms over Jenna Lyons’s look. On Sept. 27, the cast picture for the anticipated reunion was released, and several fans seemed disappointed by the fashion designer’s sartorial choices. The look in question? A black blazer, a sheer button-up shirt paired with a black tie, and — here’s the shocker — jeans. “Denim, of all things?” “How is that dress code appropriate?” “I thought she was a fashion icon,” some of the comments read.

According to Bravo, the blazer and tie were from Saint Laurent, and the sheer blouse was designed by Thom Browne; Lyons finished the look with Dries Van Noten heels and Levi’s jeans. SLP, Thom Browne, Levi’s, and Dries — does it get any more fashionable than that? But jeans were somehow the point of contention.

“The reunion — yes, I wore jeans, and I am not sorry,” Lyons captioned a now-expired Instagram Story. Somehow, jeans are unfathomable for a reality TV show reunion. When the first Real Housewives reunion premiered in 2006 (for “The Real Housewives of Orange County”), the dress code was very casual — replete with wedges and gauchos, and housewife Jeana Keough even wore a tank paired with jeans and heels. Then, in 2008, at “The Real Housewives of Atlanta”‘s reunion, the dress code became more business casual, with tunics, leggings, and cowl-neck sweaters. Somewhere between then and now, the expectation has shifted to ornate gowns with sequins, feathers, and all the finery. And while the ladies look glamorous and red carpet ready, I question if that format allows each cast member’s style to genuinely shine.

The Met Gala is the biggest night of the year in American fashion and also the most eagerly awaited red carpet among the celebrity-watching set. In recent years, we think the interest in the Costume Institute’s annual fundraising gala has far outstripped the Oscars, the Grammys or any of the other star-filled prom nights. This year’s gala paid tribute to the legendary Karl Lagerfeld, which gave the attendees a wide range in their choices, because the late designer cast such a long shadow over the last half century of fashion. The efforts this year ranged from classic looks to outrageous costumes. Here are the 25 looks that thrilled or disappointed us the most.

Dua Lipa in Chanel

The “Sweetest Pie” singer and co-star of the upcoming Barbie movie served as one of the hosts of the night, and we confess that we found her look for the evening to be pretty but severely underwhelming. It’s a perfectly fine Lagerfeld design, but the obvious centerpiece of the look is that insane Tiffany pendant. We’re not opposed to some obnoxiously large jewels at the Met Gala, but we tend to think the fashion should be the real star of the night.

This dramatic gown, which she wore in a 2004 Chanel No. 5 film, is gorgeous of course, but we didn’t agree with the styling choices here. This is the kind of dress that calls for an up-do (which she happens to look great in) and those black sandals are too focus-pulling and heavy for such a floaty, dreamy gown.

Lil Nas X’s Silver Body Makeup at the Met Gala 2023

The Met Gala is a huge night for fashion, but why wear a regular old dress or suit when you can walk the red carpet in silver body paint? That’s what Lil Nas X did on May 1. Nearly unrecognizable, the rapper was covered from head to toe in a combination of silver body makeup, glitter, pearls, and rhinestones.

Save for a face piece, tiny bottoms, and platform boots, Nas X hit the steps of the Met Gala 2023 with nothing on, yet he arguably made the biggest statement of all. The face piece completely covered his eyes, brows, and mouth — even his teeth featured a silver grill. Celebrity makeup artist Pat McGrath used Pat McGrath Labs products to create the masterpiece, along with 5,000 crystals. The glam team started work at 8:30 A.M. and finished the creation at 7 P.M.

To stay on theme, Lil Nas X’s extra-long stiletto nails were covered in similar gems by Temeka Jackson using Aprés Nails products. The only thing not covered in silver paint and glitter was his hair by Coree Moreno using Matrix products.
