While many young celebrities have adopted ’90s and early-2000s fashion trends, there’s one star who’s mastered it every time: Olivia Rodrigo. Although she’s only 20, the pop singer has quickly become a budding style maven to watch, from being a Disney Channel star to becoming one of Gen Z’s most beloved artists. While her journey is still evolving, Rodrigo has produced many fashion moments for us to enjoy, from her captivating performances to her August 2023 Vogue cover.
Since first capturing the world’s attention with her breakthrough single, “Drivers Licence,” Rodrigo has gravitated toward silhouettes that are relatively simple yet statement-making, especially on the red carpet. Just days ago, she attended the 38th annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in a Valentino LBD with a rosette at the neckline and chunky heels to match, in line with her usual aesthetic. She rocks minidresses and boots with almost every appearance, and her red sweetheart Magda Butrym design, sequinned chest-cutout Grammys afterparty dress, and purple Versace corset at the iHeartRadio Music Awards are prime examples. She also dabbles with gowns, from her ’90s-inspired slip dress for the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala to her black-and-white Thom Browne floral sheath for the 2023 Met Gala.
The “Sour” musician’s street style is just as noteworthy, where her penchant for vintage shopping is made even more obvious. Most notably, Rodrigo visited the White House in a vintage Chanel pink tweed suit and six-inch platforms, effortlessly nodding to the archival trend from the Parisian fashion house. She’s also showcased a host of edgier looks, including the cropped sweater, camo miniskirt, and infamous Marc Jacobs platform boots she wore for an art exhibit and the Hellcat baby tee and Miu Miu loafers she sported while out in New York City in September.

Olivia Rodrigo has mastered the art of re-creating the grunge glamour of the mid-’90s – that ingénue aura marked by bohemian hair, minimal make-up, and a slightly affected air. But to play into the Met Gala 2023’s theme, Rodrigo and her glam team looked to another bygone era: Old Hollywood.
Gone were allusions to Alanis Morissette, replaced by an ode to Audrey Hepburn – one furthered by a black and white gown that called to mind the Ascot races of My Fair Lady. Hairstylist Clayton Hawkins swept Rodrigo’s signature lengths into a taut midi knit, a hint of volume at the crown leading to quietly curled baby bangs. “I’ve always wanted to do a baby bang on Olivia, and I’m so glad we got to do it!” says Hawkins, who perfected her look with the help of Tangle Teezer’s The Ultimate Styler. Though the look was new territory for the pop star, certain touches (like a black manicure) ensured the moment was in keeping with her own tastes.
“The overall aesthetic was quiet but powerful, sculpted glam,” says make-up artist Nina Park, who was inspired by the graphic lines of Rodrigo’s gown to create a bold brown eye, softened by a nude lip. And the finishing touch? Winged liner using Crushliner Stylo Waterproof Eyeliner in Noir Intense, of course – in Park’s words, “Olivia’s favourite.”
Doja Cat showed up to the 2023 Met Gala in New York City Monday dressed as Choupette, the cat of the late designer Karl Lagerfeld.
The theme of this year’s Met Gala is “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” the same name as the exhibition which opens at the Met on May 5.
“The show spotlights Lagerfeld’s unique working methodology, focusing on the late designer’s stylistic vocabulary as it was expressed in ‘through lines’—aesthetic and conceptual themes that appear time and again—in his fashions from the 1950s to his final collection in 2019,” the museum’s description reads.
Doja and her team did their best to ensure that her outfit was unveiled at the right time, using umbrellas to hide her as she exited her hotel.
Doja took the role so seriously that she conducted a whole interview where she meowed with Emma Chamberlain for Vogue.
The musician also spoke with La La for Vogue about attending her first Met Gala.
Jared Leto also paid tribute to Choupette with a full body costume, which kept his identity shrouded in mystery until he removed the head. The actor/musician had a full outfit change on the carpet, switching into a black ensemble.

The Met Gala 2023’s most talked-about moments include incredible looks, surprise revelations, and felines – all in honor of Karl Lagerfeld

One cockroach had a Met Gala moment that most celebrities only dream of.

The lone roach was filmed scurrying up the Metropolitan Museum of Art stairs.

It is unclear what became of the couture roach after it disappeared into a throng of onlookers.
Certain celebrities might find it impossible to secure invitations to the Met Gala, but one cockroach got in with ease.
A lone New York City cockroach scurried up the steps of the Met while being filmed and photographed by curious onlookers.
The insect darted from side to side across the carpet, expertly navigating its way up the steps.
At one point, the couture roach paused at the top of a step as if working its angles for the paparazzi.
To some pundits, the roach’s all-black look might’ve been a safe take on the Met Gala’s Karl Lagerfeld-inspired theme, but sporting six rather than two legs on the red carpet is a bold, Kafkaesque choice.
Variety reported on Monday night that the “Met Gala Cockroach” met an untimely end shortly after its moment of glory.
“It is with deep sadness that we must report the #MetGala cockroach was stepped on. #RIP,” the media outlet tweeted.

Honoring Karl
On the first Monday in May and for more than 70 years, the prestigious Costume Institute at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art has held the same ritualistic – some might call it a circus – fund-raising gala to which the fashion and entertainment world flock. The stars, flamboyantly and extravagantly dressed, strut their stuff in the framework of an assigned theme: This year, it was to pay tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld – for which Rihanna and A$AP Rocky went the extra mile.
Lady of the Camellias
The singer Rihanna, who is pregnant with her second child, made her appearance covered in camellias, in homage to the fashion house for which Karl Lagerfeld worked for 36 years. The camellia became one of Chanel’s symbols in 1913, three years after the fashion brand was founded, when Coco Chanel was photographed on a beach in Etretat, on France’s north coast, with a flower attached to her belt. The designer loved it for its aesthetic purity but also for its olfactory neutrality: Like the dahlia, the camellia is one of the rare flowers without any smell.
Black cat
In a nod to Lagerfeld, Rihanna also made sure to hide behind a pair of shades. The designer never showed his eyes and liked to say: “Dark glasses are like eyeshadow. They make everything look younger and pretty.” However, as far as we know, he never chose to wear cat-eyes sunglasses with false lashes.
Made to measure
On Rihanna’s arm was her partner, the rapper A$AP Rocky, who was also
The Met Gala is a huge night for fashion, but why wear a regular old dress or suit when you can walk the red carpet in silver body paint? That’s what Lil Nas X did on May 1. Nearly unrecognizable, the rapper was covered from head to toe in a combination of silver body makeup, glitter, pearls, and rhinestones.
Save for a face piece, tiny bottoms, and platform boots, Nas X hit the steps of the Met Gala 2023 with nothing on, yet he arguably made the biggest statement of all. The face piece completely covered his eyes, brows, and mouth — even his teeth featured a silver grill. Celebrity makeup artist Pat McGrath used Pat McGrath Labs products to create the masterpiece, along with 5,000 crystals. The glam team started work at 8:30 A.M. and finished the creation at 7 P.M.
To stay on theme, Lil Nas X’s extra-long stiletto nails were covered in similar gems by Temeka Jackson using Aprés Nails products. The only thing not covered in silver paint and glitter was his hair by Coree Moreno using Matrix products.
Maybe body paint for clothes is a budding Met Gala trend. Last year at the Met Gala 2022, Cara Delevingne wore gold body paint on the red carpet for her own head-turning look. Ahead, take a closer peek at Lil Nas X’s look for yourself.
